At-a-Glance / Key Facts
Cracked Glazed Unit Replacement for a Hotel Near Airside Operations
Our client had a number of cracked glazed units to the hotel which required a safe and practical replacement solution. The project included several complexities, including restricted access and close proximity to an airside environment, both areas where Sky Access UK has extensive experience.
Due to limited O+M information, our Procurement Team traced old glass specification information from the original installer, with records dating back to the early 2000s. Once the glass specification and associated tints were confirmed, we were able to procure the replacement laminated units, each weighing over 200KG.

The Challenge
Limited O+M Information and Airside Constraints
The replacement works required careful planning because the hotel was located close to an airside environment and adjacent public parking areas. This meant the access strategy, lifting methodology and site movements had to be coordinated with the client and other local stakeholders.
The limited O+M information created an additional procurement challenge. To ensure the replacement units were compatible with the existing glazing, our Procurement Team investigated historic records and confirmed the original specification and tint requirements before the new laminated glass was ordered.

The Solution
Truck Mount Platform and Spider Crane Access
Our experience of working in airside environments meant we had a clear understanding of the permit, stakeholder and safe-system-of-work requirements. The team applied for the relevant permits and adapted the methodology so that all project requirements could be met safely.
To undertake the replacements, we utilised a combination of a truck mount platform and small spider crane. This set-up allowed the team to position on the Service Road ramp and safely complete particularly challenging high-level glass replacements to the corner of the building.

The Results
Completed as Scheduled With Minimal Disruption
By coordinating closely with the client and adjacent land owners, the works were scheduled around the constraints of the site and surrounding public areas. This helped minimise disruption while maintaining a safe working environment for all involved parties.
The cracked glazed units were replaced as scheduled and to the satisfaction of the client and project stakeholders. The completed works provided a safe, compatible replacement solution for the hotel while drawing on Sky Access UK’s experience in complex access and airside-adjacent glazing projects.
